Indroduction

Statement of Intent
For my exam title I have chosen the title ‘Postal’ and as a result I have taken 100 images I started off by going around and photographing everything that fell under the bracket of 'Postal'. I began by taking pictures of post boxes and going to the post office and documenting people’s movement within the post office. I would like to explore each part of postal and how society has developed, in the sense that we no longer send letter in order to find out how someone’s well being is and send post through people’s letterbox. The idea that we now have social network sites to post our thoughts and in the 21 century 'post' would refer to a message published on a social networking site. Until the rise of the internet people would have communicated through letter more frequently. When social networking sites was opened for commercial use, this would have affected the number of letters sent.

My project could explore the current trends in art and design of turning back to craftsmanship. Similar to the decline of the use of the post office and writing letters, my project could also explore the idea of going back to craft. For example I could shoot my project in 35mm film and process my own prints in the dark room. Furthermore I could experiment with liquid light and print my prints onto material such as wood, watercolour paper and glass.

I will experiment with communicating through letters to people, which I do not know to demonstrate how communication used to be a long process, I feel as though by doing this, it forms a connect with two strangers. One of my photographers is a lady called Shizuka Yokomizo she takes pictures of complete stranger through their windows. This would be something which would worth exploring, trying to represent the evolution of the 'postal’ and bringing back the idea of communicating through letters. There is something very interesting about the people who choose to be photographed in that manor, and felt I could send an advert out appealing to people who want to be photographed. This could appeal to interesting people with various interest and hobbies. I had the idea of giving these people a disposable camera and possibly see what images they come up with.Another possibility could be to exhibit their work by posting a film camera  and asking them to take photographs of their lives. This would give the audience an insight into their lives, without really knowing them. The idea of photographing old letters, that people would have written when they were younger , and possibly recreating these scenes to develop them.

I also wanted explore the evolution of postal and the metaphoric side of how the human body can be seen an object and how society can exchange body parts so easily i.e. plastic surgery. The idea that in society today people will stop at nothing to achieve the perfect look. Through time it may be fairly easy to access body parts and possibly looking at the future. The idea that a person may be able to order a body part and it gets posted to them, where do we stop?
