Letter box series

As part of my investigation, I started a series called the ‘ The letter box’ through this series I wanted to explore the obvious relation to postal which was letterboxes. I went from door to door and discovered various styles and colours of letterbox I then went on to edit them, I wanted to create a uniform arrangement of letterboxes which where photographed successfully capturing the detail. I wanted to explore the idea that when we visit a house we do not tend to notice the door or the letterbox, how ever a postman may notice each door as he makes this journey everyday. He does not know what is behind the door but can only make assumptions depending on the way the door looks. He may know that that a specific person may have a dog or cat as their can hear them when he post letter through. The door acts as a barrier between them. This could be seen, as a similar link to one of my photographers Shizuka Yokomizo as she shares a connection with the people however there is the barrier of the windows in her work. In this series the barriers is the door. The idea that a postman/postwomen has your letters and hold important information about you yet you do not know who they are.

I then went on to merge the images which I had edited and placed them next to each other. They were the same size, I wanted to create a uniform repetition, which would symbolise the idea that a postman travels everyday and him and the audience share a mutual connection through the door. They may not know each other personally however the post man would know what time the people are in and what their door looks like. I felt as though there was a power image to photograph various letterboxes and place them together. The simplicity portrays a powerful image, which also give the viewers a chance to interpret it in their own way. For example a certain door can trigger ones memory to a place, memory or even a person. This is something that everyone can relate to in terms of letterboxes

After further development with letter boxes I decided that this was something I was interested in proceeding further with my work. I felt the simplicity of arranging letterboxes together seemed to be rather power. It felt like a story to me. I then though about the idea of documenting the journey of someone who wants to order a body part and having this delivered through their door. This would then link my photographer Eleanor in my work but also include the letter box series. However I feel as though I need to develop the body issues and the idea that people want to change their bodies further.
